This is the Cheapest Supermarket in the Netherlands, According to Consumentenbond

With inflation at record highs, many Dutch consumers are seeking ways to save money on groceries. The Consumentenbond (Consumers’ Association) has conducted research to determine which supermarket offers the most affordable prices on basic own-label products. Their findings reveal that the supermarket chain Dirk is the cheapest option.

The latest report from the Consumentenbond shows that Dirk supermarkets provide the best value, particularly for staple private label items. Independent and recent studies consistently find that Dirk has the lowest average prices—a welcome choice for families wanting to keep their grocery bills under control amid economic uncertainty.

The study examined the savings possible by choosing budget brands rather than premium A-brand products. It concluded that switching to entry-level brands can typically halve shopping costs, offering significant financial relief for households facing inflation.

Dirk’s prices were found to be on average 11% lower than the national supermarket average. Conversely, the most expensive supermarket in the study charged prices 26% above average, showing how the choice of store impacts your grocery budget.

Surprisingly, discount chains like Lidl and Aldi scored only average for lowest-cost products. Aldi’s pricing was similar to Albert Heijn for comparable house brands, demonstrating that the cheapest supermarket is not always the obvious one.

Dirk’s director Marcel Huizing commented: “We’ve proved that doing things differently pays off. Stopping TV ads, fixing or lowering prices during inflation, and cutting multi-buy offers lets us save customers 11 percent on average. Our shoppers can count on real savings.”

For the research, the Consumentenbond compared prices of more than 100 essential items across the 14 largest supermarket chains, reviewing both A-brands and budget store brands. The result? Shoppers who choose budget brands save between 48% and 53% on average.

So, to stretch your grocery budget further during tough economic times, it pays to shop smart—especially at Dirk.
