Jeune Afrique Ranks Egypt Among Africa’s Top Three Best-Performing Nations

Egypt has secured a prominent spot among Africa’s top three best-performing nations, according to a recent ranking by Jeune Afrique. Egypt scored 49.91 out of 100, placing second behind South Africa (64.79) and ahead of Morocco (49.17).

This exclusive ranking, created by Jeune Afrique Media Group’s Intelligence Unit, uses a unique methodology evaluating 20 African countries based on governance, innovation, and influence.

Top Performers in Africa

South Africa leads the ranking due to its strong industrial base, active diplomatic efforts, quality infrastructure, innovation capability, and respected education system. It ranks first in both influence and innovation, accompanied by solid governance scores.

Egypt’s strong second-place reflects its balance with a governance score of 23.33, an influence score of 12.04, and an innovation score of 14.53. Morocco, in third place, scored highly in governance, with moderate influence and innovation scores.

Highlights and Other High-Ranking Countries

Botswana ranks fourth due to exceptional governance, while Kenya, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Nigeria also feature in the top ten, thanks to digital sector strength, influential companies, and overall institutional stability.

Notably, some Francophone nations such as Algeria underperformed, while Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, and Senegal showed strong governance and innovation but weaker international influence. Smaller island nations like Seychelles, Namibia, and Cape Verde are also recognized for governance strengths.

Ranking Methodology

The index goes beyond GDP to assess development through 25 indicators across three pillars:

  • Governance (50%): Includes GDP growth, foreign investment, policy effectiveness, rule of law, and corruption perception.
  • Influence (25%): Reflects diplomatic presence, cultural and sports achievements, and roles in international bodies.
  • Innovation (25%): Measures university quality, patents, startup capital raised, and university reputation.

Each pillar is scored out of 100, weighted, and combined for a national score out of 100.

Conclusion

Egypt’s inclusion among the top three African nations in this comprehensive ranking reaffirms its leadership role in governance, innovation, and diplomatic influence across the continent.
