PSV Eindhoven had hoped to receive a major offer from England for Johan Bakayoko this summer. For a long time, there was serious interest from Newcastle United, but now it appears that the Premier League club will spend its money elsewhere. This is a financial setback for PSV.

Newcastle's €65 Million Bid for Elanga
Fabrizio Romano, a well-known football transfer journalist, has reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Newcastle United has made a formal offer of €65 million to Nottingham Forest for Anthony Elanga. The Swedish international had a standout season at Forest. At just 23 years old, the winger was developed in the Manchester United youth academy and made the move to Nottingham Forest for €16 million two years ago.
Elanga was set to play in the Conference League with his club next season, but with Newcastle's offer, he could now move to a team competing in the Champions League.
What Does This Mean for Bakayoko and PSV?
The chance that Johan Bakayoko will join Newcastle United has decreased substantially now that the club is targeting Elanga. Bakayoko, a young Belgian winger playing for the reigning Dutch champions, was high on the wish list for Newcastle for quite some time.
Back in the winter transfer window, English media reported that Newcastle United were willing to spend €30 million on Bakayoko. The Belgian winger remains under contract in Eindhoven until the summer of 2026. If PSV want to cash in while his value is high, a sale this summer or next winter seems necessary.
A Missed Financial Opportunity
Missing out on the English millions is painful for PSV—not just because Newcastle won't be buying Bakayoko, but also because a big Premier League transfer fee can have a huge impact on a club's strategy for the future. With Premier League interest fading, PSV may have to look elsewhere for buyers or lower its expectations for Bakayoko's price. This puts additional pressure on the club, as they try to balance success on the pitch with financial stability.
Transfer stories in football often hold surprises, and the saga around Bakayoko may not be over yet. But for now, the major English windfall seems to be slipping away.
